Older adults face the risk of heart attacks and strokes more often than younger people. Researches reveal that adults under 65 with high cholesterol levels should pay more attention to their health and rely on the help of professional caregivers and healthcare experts to reduce the risk of heart attacks and death.
At the same time, other researchers conclude that people with high levels of total cholesterol and a low level of bad cholesterol might be helpful in terms of performing their daily activities and protecting their life to preserve it for longer. Moreover, it turned out that having low cholesterol levels is linked with the increased risk of death from cancer, respiratory diseases, and other accidents in adults aged 80 and older.
Older adults taking medications that lower cholesterol levels may get fewer benefits for their health as they age. In medicine, it’s called the “risk factor paradox.” It means that for adults aged 80 and older, having health conditions considered risky for younger adults predicts better survival. Such conditions include having higher blood pressure, higher cholesterol level, and higher body weight index.
Another term worth defining at this point is “triglycerides.” It refers to the type of blood fat that your body uses for energy. Younger adults with high triglycerides face an increased risk of heart diseases. However, there haven’t been many records of adults aged 80 or higher being affected by high triglycerides.
